App of the Month: IFTTT

Our Rating:

What is it: IFTTT (abbreviation of “If This Then That”) pronounced like “gift” without the “g”, is a web-based service which allows other services (e.g., Gmail, Google Reader, Instagram, Craigslist) to be programmed by means of simple conditional statements (called “recipes”).

Why:  This is mobile technology working for you. Channels are services like Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, as well as devices like Philips Hue, Belkin WeMo, and UP by Jawbone. Recipes are connections between your Channels that unlock entirely new ways for your services and devices to communicate with each other.

Cost: Free

What IFTTT Does:  For the uninitiated, IFTTT (short for If This, Then That) allows you to connect different web-services and gadgets to each other over the Internet. You start by activating the different Channels (apps, websites, devices) that you use, like Facebook, Gmail, or Fitbit. Using simple logic, you can then set rules for how these channels interact. If This happens on Twitter, then That will happen on Facebook, for example.
